Wear and tear on excavator undercarriage components is unavoidable for all equipment owners, and neglecting regular maintenance can reduce machine operational efficiency and speed up the deterioration of undercarriage parts.

1. Check bolts regularly on track shoes

Listen for unusual noises when you enter or exit the excavator cab. If you hear sounds coming from the track shoes or notice any wobbling, it’s important to inspect for loose or missing bolts.

2. Replace bent track shoes timely

If you discover a bent track shoe, be sure to replace it promptly—otherwise, other track shoes will soon become bent as well. Track shoes support one another during undercarriage movement, so ignoring a bent shoe will eventually result in multiple damaged shoes, which will undoubtedly raise your maintenance expenses.

3. Chain guard

Chain guards are located on the bottom of the undercarriage. While this component is often overlooked by excavator owners, it plays a crucial role in keeping all undercarriage parts aligned as the equipment moves. For this reason, inspect chain guards regularly and replace them if they become damaged or bent.

4. Sprocket

The sprocket is positioned at the rear of the excavator. Owners should regularly check the wear of the sprocket teeth and ensure the sprocket remains in good working condition.

It’s important to note that frequently operating the excavator in reverse will speed up sprocket wear and tear.

5. Proper track tension

Avoid running the tracks too tight, as this increases the excavator’s traveling resistance and causes other components to wear out more quickly. On the other hand, overly loose tracks can lead to friction and wear between the tracks and other undercarriage parts. Thus, it’s vital to adjust track tension according to the terrain. For instance, when working on soft soil or cobblestones, keep the tracks slightly loose; for flat, hard surfaces, tightening the tracks is recommended.

6. Keep your excavator undercarriage clean

Failing to clean debris from the undercarriage regularly will increase friction between components, which in turn accelerates the wear of undercarriage spare parts.
